Professional Educational
Opportunities
Each year, several local hospitals,
nursing schools and medical schools send more than 100
nursing and medical students and physicians-in-training to Horizon for rotations through an
exemplary hands-on training program in end-of-life care. Horizon staff
has also delivered end-of-life care workshops to hundreds of attending
physicians and nurses on staff at the Cook County Bureau of Health
Services. For three years, Horizon has hosted and trained
medical students from across the country in the End-of-Life Care
Fellowship program of the
American Medical Students Association. Interns in social work and bereavement
counseling also learn to care of the terminally ill at Horizon.
During their
rotations, students learn the essential elements of care at the end
of life, including pain and symptom management, compassionate
communication, and spiritual support. Students and residents
observe end-stage patients across the continuum of care, with an
emphasis on hospice in the home. The most important lessons
learned may be those that can be used throughout medical practice --
such as determining a prognosis, treatment decisions, and maintaining a
trusting physician-patient relationship.
