What Do Hospice Volunteers Do?

Caring, committed volunteers can be found at the heart of Horizon Hospice’s Circle of Care. Since its inception, Horizon has built its sterling reputation on the compassion and skill of very special individuals who contribute their time, talents, and true generosity to those at the end of life.

The Spring 2010 Class is full. Check back in the summer for Fall 2010 volunteer training classes!

Chicago Volunteer Training begins on March 3, 2010.

Training consists of five 3-hour sessions in the evening, for a total of 15 hours. Click here for the most recent training and educational events schedule.

Applications for the Chicago Avenue training class can be found here.

Please Note that potential volunteers must meet with the appropriate Volunteer Coordinator before being accepted into the program.

Horizon provides intensive training to ensure that volunteers build the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully fill their role. At ongoing volunteer support meetings, volunteers learn more about the organization’s workings, as well as discuss the challenges and rewards of hospice volunteer work.

Those looking for a personally enriching and emotionally gratifying volunteer experience can choose involvement in different ways.
  1. Direct care volunteers assist the patient and family. Volunteers may simply visit with the patient, provide respite for the caregiver, or perform helpful tasks such as cooking, shopping, cleaning or even mowing the lawn.

  2. Bereavement Care volunteers provide emotional support to family members following the death of a loved one. By maintaining involvement with family members, Horizon can monitor the grieving process and can help guide a bereaved person toward resuming a healthy, productive life.

  3. Administrative volunteers may assist staff with the many administrative details in the office. Tasks may include: copying and filing documents, answering phones, collating, or mailing.

  4. Additionally, Horizon is building a list of on-call volunteers who may be available to help out in times of pressing need.
Bi-lingual Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply.
