Inpatient Unit at Rush University Medical Center
Horizon was selected by Rush University Medical Center to create and operate the first inpatient hospice unit in a major teaching hospital in Chicago. The Ada F. Addington Inpatient Hospice Unit, named after Horizon’s founder, will accommodate up to 13 patients from all over the city and suburbs. Housed on the fifth floor of the Johnston R. Bowman Center on the Rush campus, it will have all the touches of home.
The Horizon staff will make sure that all patients and visitors receive the comforting care that is the hallmark of hospice. Pediatric and adult patients from any hospital, residential facility or private home will be welcomed on the unit. We expect the unit to open in early 2012.
The agreement between Horizon Hospice and Rush University Medical Center was signed

Please Help Us Complete Our Circle of Care
Horizon’s Board of Directors and the campaign committee members are working to raise $2.7 million.
The Coleman Foundation has awarded Horizon a matching grant of $100,000. Please help us meet this challenge grant by making a generous contribution to the campaign.

Your participation in our campaign will ensure that we provide each patient with a sense of life affirmation and medical competence that addresses physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs.
The unit will accommodate thirteen private patient rooms, two of which can be converted to pediatric rooms. Each room will have a fold-out bed so family members can spend the night, art work and a television. Another room designated for spiritual care can be altered to a patient room should the need arise. A central gathering area includes a fireplace, aquarium and children’s play space. The unit also features a family room and kitchenette with table and chairs, sink, microwave and refrigerator. An office for the nurse manager and medical director and space for staff/team meetings is also planned. The inpatient unit will also serve as an educational and training site for future clinicians.
